The goal of this review is to judge these copy writers on the only metric that matters: Sales.
Any service that generates overly complex, irrelevant copy and violates some of the basic tenets of copywriting are to be disregarded.
Any service that offers copy that is simple, elegant and likely to sneak past your customer’s defenses is going to be well regarded.
With that said, let’s get a refresher on some of the top 3 most popular FREE AI copy generating services.

Semrush
Semrush is a huge company. I’ve seen so many examples of their blog all over the internet. Which is to say their popularity extends them a bit of credibility. I trust them with my information. Luckily, I didn’t have to trust them with my card information as their text generator is 100% free and doesn’t even require a sign up.
Their text generation tool helps with a variety of content but there’s only one button for “copy.” But, hey, that’s not a problem if their copy tool is good. To start it asks for me to provide details of what my copy is to be about.
I put, “Write me a landing page for an eBook on writing fiction with artificial intelligence.”
But it didn’t give me a landing page. Just a few options of title with a bit of intro text.

So, these are not the assignment. And, what’s more, the copy isn’t attention getting. If I used this, the prospect’s eyes would glaze over, and they’d move along, and I’d lose a sale.

Copy AI
Copy AI is another popular AI bot. Its interface is absolutely beautiful and well-conceived. This one DOES require sign in but many of the features are free. Which is nice.
I’ve demo’d the “brand voice” tool for this blog before. But let me show you what it can do for the emotionality of your copy.
Here’s the previous 2 paragraphs written with a voice (style) I created based on previous posts I’ve made and fed into Copy AI to generate a style:
“So, what are you waiting for? Experience the power of Copy AI today and elevate your copywriting to new heights. Allow your brand voice to shine and connect with your audience in ways you never thought possible. Sign up now and witness firsthand what Copy AI can do for the emotionality of your copy. Your readers will thank you for it.”

Nice, right? And it sounds like a human created it, but apart from the original ideas the style is entirely AI generated. And it’s a feature you get for free with Copy AI.
There’s also a button on the bottom of the interface that allows you to “Browse Prompts.” Which will give you prompt templates to create your copy on the subject of Content/SEO, Email Marketing, Paid Ads, PR/Communications, Recruiting, Sales, Social Media, and Strategy. There’s so much to explore there but let’s put this to the test. Can it craft good email copy? We shall see.
Well, it created a LENGTHY sales email. Based on a prompt I wrote about “Mel AI,” a service helping people write better emails faster. I’ll share with you some snippets:
Intro: “Are you tired of spending countless hours grappling with writer’s block, trying to craft compelling emails that truly resonate with your audience? Do you find yourself wishing for a way to boost the efficiency, speed, and quality of your email marketing efforts?”
“Features:
Speed: Mel AI writes emails faster than you ever thought possible, allowing you to save precious time and resources.
Quality: With its advanced algorithms, Mel AI ensures that your emails are not just words on a screen, but powerful, emotionally resonant messages that captivate your audience.

All of this is USABLE stuff. I might go in and tweak a few things but for a basic marketing email it’s compelling, I want to keep reading it instead of clicking away. In the absence of an in-house copywriter this is a good alternative.
But here’s where this AI copy generator starts to fall apart. I used “20 something content creator” as my target audience and it gave me this:
Benefits for 20 something content creators:
“As a 20 something content creator, you understand the importance of creating authentic, engaging content that speaks to your audience. With Mel AI….”
Can you just feel the RESONANCE with the population known as 20 SOMETHING CONTENT CREATORS?! No? Neither can I. But I appreciate the effort.

Rytr
Before this review I was not very familiar with Rytr but it’s got some bonafides: a 4.9/5 satisfaction rating on many services and it’s had over 8,000,000 users. So, naturally, I’m primed to think the stuff this service produces has quality. But you never really know unless you’ve tried it. Here goes.
So, it generates a drop down with sample prompts called “use cases.” Only 2 of them are copy related. I tried Copywriting in the AIDA format.
Here’s the prompt I fed Rytr:

This is actually really good. It’s in plain-spoken English, it’s a joy to read. And, I must admit, even with my copywriting training I couldn’t improve upon this.

I will admit I did not think Rytr would improve upon Copy AI. I may have been brainwashed into thinking that bigger companies are better. Copy AI wins in terms of its sheer variety of options of writing copy, but if Rytr were a person we’d say he’s the better writer.
The important thing with copy is that it’s simple and you don’t realize you’re being sold to. And the language is so awkward with Copy AI that people would be tempted to “bounce” away from the page. Rytr is so simple (and SHORT) that people would stick around to hear what the writer had to say.
