ChatGPT vs Gemini: Which AI is Better? (Review)

(Reading Time: 5 minutes)

ChatGPT and Gemini have got to be the two most popular AI models out there.

But with great popularity comes great hype. And do each of these services live up to all the hype?

Let’s see how ChatGPT vs Gemini stacks up!

WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?

Free AND Paid

Both of the AI models offer free and paid tiers of experience. And, in my experience, the free version “gets the job done” so adequately that you may never feel compelled to pay for the premium versions of these models. I will note that when it comes to ChatGPT vs Gemini, that Gemini offers more features in its “free” tier than ChatGPT does in its “free” tier.

Conversation Capability

Both of them are complex enough to hold conversations with a user. Although, Gemini succeeds more at creating a “conversational style” whereas ChatGPT has more complex English so it’s better at philosophical or intellectual conversations.

Other Basics That Most AI Do

They both answer any question you could have. It’s just that the clarity of response may be different depending on their area of expertise.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT?

A ChatGPT vs Gemini Showdown

Trained on Different Source Material

Gemini is trained on Google’s search database in real time, which makes it much better for searching or writing about current events.

ChatGPT is trained on articles, books and Wikipedia. Being built on such text-heavy resources allows ChatGPT to write more complicated projects.

Which is better for visual people?

Gemini is more visual. It seamlessly integrates visuals and links into its responses, which enhances user experience. ChatGPT is primarily text based, so that could influence your decision to use the service if you are, for instance, a visual artist.

And with Gemini’s premium version you get to generate images based on your text prompts. So, overall, Gemini is very friendly to the visual people around us. ChatGPT? Not so much.

What’s better at logic and code generation?

Do you make a lot of spreadsheets? Gemini’s got your back. It has a THOUROUGH understanding of spreadsheet structures. ChatGPT? Not so much.

However, ChatGPT has been known to excel at logical reasoning and code generation. However, you’re likely to get more of those functions with premium than the free version.

What’s better for writers?

ChatGPT is better for writers overall. It was trained on lots of text (such as books) that allows it to write creative fiction. It has even analyzed the writing styles of famous authors. So, you can simply say “generate me a black cat with magical powers in the style of Jane Austen” and it will generate a convincing copycat of Jane Austen’s style. It can excel at writing in different formats: poetry, short stories, etc.

However, Gemini is better for blog posts. It’s simply better at generating text in a conversational style that mimics real language.

What are their weaknesses?

ChatGPT lacks images and its user experience may be less intuitive overall. Especially with its complex vocabulary that’s hard to read.

Gemini has issues being factually accurate, so you may need to carefully look over your prompts. But that’s true of ChatGPT as well.

What are their core strengths?

ChatGPT shines in its ability to generate creative text formats, like poems or even lines of code. It tackles complex reasoning tasks exceptionally well, making it a great tool for brainstorming or problem-solving. Additionally, ChatGPT boasts a vast knowledge base, allowing it to deliver comprehensive answers in a clear and concise way.

When it comes to specific tasks, Gemini excels. Need a complex spreadsheet formula? Gemini’s got you covered. It also integrates seamlessly with Google products, providing real-time access to information.

Another big advantage of Gemini is its focus on accessibility. Stricter filtering processes make it less prone to biases and factual errors compared to ChatGPT, ensuring you get reliable information.

ChatGPT vs Gemini: Target Audiences

YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHOOSE GEMINI IF…

  • You value a natural conversational style for brainstorming or creative writing prompts.
  • You find the integration of visuals and links in responses helpful.
  • You require strong AI image generation capabilities (with the Advanced tier).
  • You need assistance with generating spreadsheet formulas.
  • You prefer a user-friendly and visually appealing interface with easy access through your Google account.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHOOSE CHATGPT IF…

  • You prioritize tasks requiring logical reasoning or code generation (depending on the version).
  • You desire a wider variety of creative text formats like poems or scripts (depending on the version).
  • You value the potential for more creative freedom, acknowledging the possibility of misuse.

My Personal Recommendation

I primarily use Gemini. ChatGPT is great at generating short stories and other forms of fiction, so if you’re looking to write fiction, that’s a good place to go.

But here’s where ChatGPT is weakest: It has overly complex, wordy responses. You have to read and re-read every response it gives you a few times before you can kinda, sorta understand what it’s trying to tell you.

And if you try to write non-fiction with it (such as a blog post) its responses are basically unreadable to the beginner.

So, my answer on what’s best is: Gemini.

But when it comes to fiction writing I have not seen any better one than ChatGPT.

If you’d like to learn how to use ChatGPT for fiction writing and other functions (like generating headlines or resumes) I’ve posted a page of ChatGPT How-Tos here.

But I would like to make what is, perhaps, an unusual point: If you’re skilled at prompting, pretty much any AI will work for you. Maybe what ChatGPT answers you doesn’t go over your head like it goes over mine. If you know how to make the most of each AI you should be good to go.

And as much as I’ve spent time today comparing these two services there’s always the option of… using both. That way you’ll maximize the potential of your work.

Wherever you choose to go from here, I hope your AI journey is a pleasant one!
